About
Who we are
A small independent team writing honest home food preservation reviews.
I started The Preserving Kitchen after a summer of putting up too much garden produce and realizing every buying guide I trusted was steering me wrong in slightly different ways. Retailer reviews are filtered. Brand-owned editorial is marketing wearing an apron. Most other review sites quietly reshape their picks toward whichever vendor has the most generous partnership that week. For gear you rely on to keep food safe through the winter, that is not good enough.
So I built this. We pull from the places where people actually say what they think: r/Canning, r/fermentation, r/dehydrating, homesteading boards, and the long-running smoking and charcuterie forums. We run the gear ourselves, score it against comparable models, and try to give you the same honest answer an experienced neighbor who cans every fall would give you across the fence.
What started as dehydrator reviews has grown to cover the rest of the pantry: pressure and water-bath canners, vacuum sealers, fermentation crocks, cure kits and smokers, grain mills, and long-term storage. The same trust gap runs through all of it. We hold to the same standard: real owner reports, no fabricated quotes, no rankings shaped by who pays us most.
We use a consistent three-axis scoring framework (Preservation Performance, Durability, and Ease of Use), so a $60 dehydrator and a $300 dehydrator are both judged on whether they deliver against their own price point, not on whether the pricier one is technically better. Anything we cite traces to a real source we can link to. We don't fabricate quotes, scores, or timelines.
We never accept payment for coverage, our rankings aren't shaped by partnership deals, and if you ever spot a review that reads like marketing, call it out.

How we're funded
The Preserving Kitchen is reader-supported. Many of the product links on our site are affiliate links: if you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
That funding never shapes what we say. We decide what to recommend first, then add the links, never the other way around. A product earns its place on the merits, whether or not it pays us anything, and we don't accept payment from brands for coverage, placement, or a better score.

How we score
Preservation Performance
How well it actually preserves: drying evenness, safe and stable pressure or seal, temperature control, and consistent results batch after batch.
Durability
Build quality and how it holds up over years of seasonal use, from gaskets and seals to motors, heating elements, and housings.
Ease of Use
Setup, everyday operation, cleanup, and how forgiving it is for beginners versus high-volume preservers.
Each dimension is scored 1.0-10.0 and averaged into an overall rating. One decimal place, intentionally, to reduce score clustering across the catalog.
